Strong double-sided adhesive tape. How to choose the best one

Do you have strong double sided adhesive tape? Or, do you have extra-strong double-sided adhesive tape? This is a question that the customer service assistants of our e-commerce dedicated to the online sale of professional adhesive tape feel they are asked quite often.

And we’re not surprised. Strong double-sided adhesive tape is still seen today as a “novelty”, as something quite recent in invention: we are not yet fully accustomed to replacing glues, screws, and nails with double-sided adhesive tape, allowing us to attach even heavy objects without requiring big operations.

In fact, many people still are surprised that a simple painting can be hung with only double-sided tape!

In such a scenario, it is therefore not surprising that we are asked “do you have a strong double-sided adhesive tape” quite often, as this tool is still perceived as something exceptional.

That is not true, however: in our category dedicated to double-sided adhesives, and especially in the one dedicated to high performance double-sided adhesives, there are many different types of very powerful double-sided adhesive tapes.

How should you choose between the different rolls?

Strong double-sided tape: what does it mean?

When is it appropriate to call double-sided tape strong? When using such adjectives, as we all know, it all depends on the point of view.

In the case of double-sided adhesive tapes, however, one can actually speak of a particular force when the tape in question grants two different aspects.

First of all, the strong double-sided adhesive tape is, of course, one which has a higher-level adhesive capacity, which can therefore withstand great weights thanks to the power of its two adhesive layers.

But that is not all: to be really defined as “strong”, that same industrial double-sided adhesive tape must maintain those characteristics over time.

The best double-sided tapes, both strong and extra-strong, then, are those which offer a high rate of adhesive capability from the beginning, a few moments from the application, and for a long time.

It is difficult to call a double-sided adhesive “industrial” when it starts to lose adhesive capacity only after a few months!

This is when it is possible to call a double-sided tape strong and when, instead, we’re dealing with common tape, to be used to glue paper or cardboard and nothing more.

It should be stressed at this point that there are different types of strong double-sided adhesive tapes, based on the materials of which they are made.

Types of strong double-sided tape

It is possible to divide strong double-sided tape into three large groups. These are technical and specialized distinctions: below we outline the types of double-sided adhesive tape according to the context of use.

The first of the groups is that of supported double-sided adhesive tape, i.e. double-sided adhesive tape with a classic format.

Then, there is tape made with a polyester support at its centre, which houses two adhesive masses on its sides.

These tapes are easy to use, extremely versatile, but cannot reach the power of other types of double-sided adhesive tape; the durability of supported double-sided adhesive tape can, however, be remarkable.

Then there’s acrylic foam double-sided adhesive tape. Here, there no longer is a central support with adhesive film on its two sides; the structure in this case is singular, and is made of acrylic foam.

In practice, it is preformed adhesive foam which, due to its characteristics, can be used with great results in the field of construction, or in any such case where good power is needed, even on surfaces that are not perfectly smooth.

These are, in a nutshell, semi-structural and structural double-sided adhesive tapes.

Finally, there are the strong adhesive tapes belonging to the third group, namely the double-sided PE foam tapes.

It is possible to see these rolls as the solution that takes its cue from the two previous ones: in this case, there is adhesive PE foam film on both sides, perfect to be used indoors instead of sealants and silicones.

This, it must be said, is a synthetic classification of the various types of strong double-sided adhesive: there are in fact many different sub-categories with different characteristics!

What kind of strong double-sided tape should you choose?

There are different types of strong adhesive tapes, as we have outlined above, made of different materials and with characteristics depending on the use that you need them for.

Think for example of double-sided fitted carpet tape, which can be strong and permanent or strong but at the same time easily removable, so as to leave no traces behind.

Then, there are high performance double-sided adhesive tapes for structural use, which adhere perfectly to a wide range of substrates, from metal to cement, and which can withstand high temperatures: These are therefore double-sided adhesive tapes which can easily replace not only liquid bonding agents, but also screws, nails, rivets, and welds, while creating permanent insulation from water and moisture.

In any case, it is essential to choose between acrylic or foam structural double-sided adhesives, a choice that can be made considering the type of surfaces involved as well.
